Cough (Kaas); Causes, Symptoms, Investigations, Home Remedies, Self Managements & Herbal Treatment

Coughing is the body's defence mechanism of removing mucus or foreign material from the air passages (mainly upper respiratory track). That means when some dust enters in your respiratory track, then your body will try to expel out that from your body in the form of cough.

           It can classify into two types.

  • Productive cough
  • Nonproductive cough

Productive Cough

            It is a condition where plenty of mucus (So called Sputum) produces and which used to drain down the back of the throat from the nose, or it may come out from the lungs. Such condition should not be suppressed by any medicine.

Causes 

  • Nasal Polyp
  • Exposure to Dust
  • Exposure to extreme cold
  • Exposure to alternate weather (A/C the No A/C)
  • Long Journey and exposure to different weather
  • Climatic Change
  • Diseases like Productive Chronic Bronchial Asthma
  • Viral infection
  • Chronic Lung disease
  • Infection in respiratory track
  • Smoking
  • Worm Infestation (Commonly seen in long standing worm infestation cases) 

Non Productive Cough (Dry Cough)

          It is just the opposite of productive cough, where the production of cough is nil. It is the primary stage where body reflects just after exposure to dust or allergens.

Causes

  • Diseases like Chronic Bronchial Asthma
  • Exposure to cold and dust
  • Exposure to allergens 
  • Viral infection
  • Broncospsam (spasms in the bronchial tubes for allergen or irritants)
  • Worm Infestation (Commonly seen in long standing worm infestation cases)
             A dry cough or Nonproductive cough patient can be turned to productive cough if it is not treated properly

Investigations Required

  • Chest X-ray PA View
  • Blood Routine Examination
  • AEC (Absolute Eosinophil Count)

Complications

  • Excessive sweating, anorexia, exhaustion
  • Bradyarrhythmias and tachyarrhythmias
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Arterial hypo-tension
  • Herniation 
  • Cough syncope
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Stroke due to vertebral artery dissection
  • Exacerbation of asthma
  • Herniation of the lung
  • Laryngeal trauma (laryngeal edema and hoarseness)
  • Disruption of surgical wounds.

Treatment Of Cough (Kaas)

Home Remedies 
Things To Do At Home
  • Complete bed rest.
  • Avoid smoke and give a cross mark to your smoking habits
  • Avoid cold exposure.
  • Avoid Air Coller use (AC can be used by maintain a normal body temperature)
  • Bath with cold water or fun in swimming pools must be avoided.
  • Avoid exposure to dust or cold air
  • Body sprays or other insect killers can make your condition worse, so better keep them aside.
  • Food should be warm and fresh.
  • Plenty amount of fluid orally.
  • Curd is not good for Cough as per Ayurveda says.
